Uncertainty in Illness and Death Attitudes of the Elderly with Chronic Disease: Focused on the mediating effects of their self-mastery

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate how the uncertainty of illness as psychological stress changes the death attitudes of the elderly with chronic illness. Also it focused on the mediation effect of their self-mastery between the uncertainty of illness and their death attitudes. The study target was collected from 529 elderly over 60 who had chronic illness and lived in the community. Results are as follows. First, the uncertainty in illness had negative influences both on the self-mastery and on the death attitudes directly. Second, it was also verified that the self-mastery had the partial mediating effects between the uncertainty in illness and the death attitudes. These results have significant implications. First, the uncertainty in illness needs to be emphasized as an important factor affecting death attitudes as well as psychological stress. Second, it is imperative for health professionals to deal with the self-mastery to enhance the positive death attitudes of the elderly with chronic illness.
